Susie is a Sussex based mixed media textile artist. Inspired by the muted palette of windswept northern beaches, maps and geology, it is the colour light and emptiness she strives to capture.

Course description
The 3-day workshop offers a safe nurturing space to take time out to discover what resonates with you and encourage the development of a personal reflective sketchbook practice.
Immersing ourselves in the inspirational setting at The Waldron, we will combine outdoor exploration with studio practice to discover innovative and intuitive ways to visually document gathered resources. With a focus on natural materials, students will be introduced to painting with earth pigments mixed in a soya milk binder Susie developed for her studio practice.

Working on paper and cloth the course encourages everyone to be playful, curious, building up layers to create depth, movement, texture exploring experimental drawing and mark making techniques using stitch, found objects, ink and gesso. Susie will demonstrate how to prepare and blend natural earth pigments in the homemade soya milk binder. Using the pigment paint we will make colour studies to achieve subtle variations of hue, tone value to discover the endless possibilities of creating a unique personal colour palette.
Susie will be available throughout for one-to-ones to discuss work in progress.

- Papers:
- selection of various weights/textures of paper for painting on
- Notebook/sketchbook (existing one is good)
Tools:
- Selection of paint brushes: fine, flat, broad, round (student sets are good value)
- Any favourite mark making tools
- Fine liner pens various nib sizes: pigment waterproof ink (0.1/0.3/0.5/0.8)
- Pencils – a 2B is good – graphite stick if you have one
- Scissors general use
- Craft knife & metal ruler
- cutting mat (if you have one)
- awl if you have one for bookbinding
Cloth:
- calico, linen cotton, gauze to paint – ¼ metre or smaller – (new cloth must be prewashed at 60C to remove treatment so the pigment can bind to it)
Thread:
- various thickness linen cotton embroidery, weaving sewing – grey, black off white
- Basic hand sewing kit: various sized needles
Studio:
- Drop cloth: couple of old tea towel or piece of cloth to work on
- Apron and protective gloves if you use them
Collecting:
- small/medium Ziplock bags (2), secateurs & trowel (if you have them)
Outdoors:
- Walking boots and all-weather gear – something to sit on – folding stool, mat or plastic bag – small bag to take outside
