Your Course
This three-day workshop is an introduction to creating wafer-thin porcelain bowls using flax-reinforced porcelain, formed over an inflated balloon. You will also discover how to make a shrinking support that allows these delicate bowls to be suspended in the kiln during firing.
We will begin by getting to know the material and learning techniques for creating extremely thin, lightweight pieces. Guy Van Leemput will demonstrate a range of methods for applying patterns and surface designs, with plenty of opportunity for you to experiment and practise the techniques yourself.
Once your first “maiden bowl” is complete, you will be encouraged to push the material and your own skills further. Guy will introduce a series of more advanced techniques, including methods using a mini clay press. Each participant will make three bowls, experimenting with one or more of the techniques demonstrated throughout the workshop.
Alongside the bowls, we will make the special swinging supports that carry the delicate pieces safely through the firing process. There will also be time to explore techniques that particularly appeal to you, or to adapt the processes to suit your own ideas and practice.
At the end of the workshop, the finished pieces will be placed in the kiln for firing.
