Jake Winkle is a distinguished British watercolourist whose work is defined by its bold use of colour, dynamic brushwork, and expressive interpretation of light and movement. Educated at Bournemouth College of Art and Brighton Polytechnic, he became a full-time professional artist in 1993. His chosen subjects, frequently wildlife and equestrian themes, are rendered with energy and spontaneity, reflecting his philosophy of painting what is seen rather than what is known. His work has been exhibited at the Mall Galleries in London, including with the Royal Society of British Artists, and he has received numerous accolades, among them awards from the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society and the Society of Equestrian Artists.
Winkle’s reputation extends beyond his studio practice through his contributions to teaching and publication. He is a regular contributor to The Artist Magazine and the author of Light and Movement in Watercolour (2012), co-written with Robin Capon. In addition, he has produced several instructional films and regularly leads workshops and masterclasses both in the UK and abroad. His paintings are held in private and public collections, and he has undertaken commissions for prominent organisations including the National Trust. Based in Dorset, Winkle continues to balance an active exhibition schedule with his role as a highly regarded tutor and demonstrator of contemporary watercolour technique.
