Susan Nemeth
Susan is a porcelain artist, based in London, whose practice began over 50 years ago. She trained at Bournville School of Art, Wolverhampton Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. The strongly graphic textile and ceramic designs of the 1950’s and 60’s inspire her inlaid work, as well as painters such as Henri Matisse, Ben Nicholson, Paul Klee and Eva Hesse. She has been awarded internationally and included in many publications.
Alongside her studio practice, Nemeth has developed an extensive teaching career. She has led workshops, masterclasses and lectures in the UK and internationally, specialising particularly in coloured porcelain, inlaid porcelain and Nerikomi techniques. Her teaching has taken her to institutions including La Meridiana International School of Ceramics in Italy, the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemét, Hungary, Morley College in London, and other universities, colleges and ceramic centres. Her workshops encourage participants to experiment with colour, pattern, layering and imagery while developing practical skills in working with porcelain.
Nemeth’s expertise in inlaid coloured porcelain involves laminating layers of differently coloured porcelain and slips, creating patterns and imagery within the clay itself. These layered sheets can then be rolled, stretched, cut and formed into bowls, vases, plates and wall pieces. Her masterclasses explore techniques including staining and layering slips, hand-cut inlay, stencilling, collage, surface finishing and the manipulation of porcelain slabs.
Her work has been exhibited extensively in Britain and internationally, with solo exhibitions in London, Edinburgh, Inverness, Somerset and Scotland, as well as exhibitions in France and the Netherlands. She has also participated in major international craft and ceramics exhibitions, including Collect, the British Ceramics Biennial, the European Prize for Applied Arts and exhibitions in Germany, Switzerland, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, the United States and France.
