Wayne Clark

Since graduating from Harrow, where he studied workshop ceramics, he has worked as a Demonstrator on the B.A. Applied Arts course at Wrexham School of Art (Wrexham University), where he also gained an M.A. in Applied Arts.

Based on the North Wales coast, he works from his studio, where he has a wood kiln. He creates large sculptural pieces alongside smaller functional ware, generally using a stoneware body with additions of fired Ruabon red brick clay, coarse sand and grogs. He uses a variety of ash and Shino glazes, as well as vitreous slips—both thick and thin—applied by hand to create fascinating surface effects. He often makes his own tools and incorporates found objects to create distinctive marks and textures.

His large sculptural pieces, particularly vases, bottle forms, tables and seats, give him the opportunity to make radical and exuberant marks. During the wood-firing process, pools of glaze develop and run over the work, creating areas of both dramatic and subtle interest.

There is a powerful energy in his pots. While immediate in their allure, they reward contemplation and allow for a deeper appreciation over time. They are pots to live with: to use or to reflect upon.

He has taken part in numerous collaborative projects and has exhibited throughout the British Isles and Europe, participating in potters’ markets and exhibitions. He is also part of the team that created and runs Ceramic Wales, an event that has been held since 2016.
