Overview:

The aim of this course is to introduce students to an unconventional practice within ceramics. Glazes will be considered as a sculptural form rather than a decorative surface. Throughout the course you’ll understand what raw materials are required to explore fluidity in glaze and how this affects the melting points. We will work with low and mid temperature kiln firings and learn how to manipulate the chemistry to effect flow, as well as temperature. You will be supplied with test bisqueware for initial tests but you are encouraged to bring your own bisqued sculptural pieces to build upon.

Aims:

  • Understand the chemistry required for sculptural glazes
  • Understand flux ratios, melting points and additives
  • Mix your own glaze tests
  • Review the best ways to protect kilns and shelves

Outcomes:

  • A range of tests that display melting points
  • Colour glaze tests
  • Final sculptural pieces with sculptural glazes

Summary of Day One:

–       Introduction to simple glaze chemistry (PowerPoint and Samples)

–       Exercise: Understand melting points through materials and kiln temperatures

–       Exercise: Exploring additives in sculptural glaze

Summary of Day Two:

–       Review results

–       Exercise: Prepare bigger batch of sculptural glaze or lots of small  amounts

–       Exercise: Apply sculptural glaze to ready-made sculptural bisqueware
