Annie Guilfoyle
Annie is a West Sussex-based garden designer running a studio and teaching at West Dean, Great Dixter, and Chanticleer. She co-directs Garden Masterclass Ltd with Noel Kingsbury, lectures internationally, and writes for leading gardening magazines.

Your Course
Design your own garden with Annie Guilfolye
This hands-on course is ideal for enthusiastic amateur gardeners—whether you’re starting with a blank slate or looking to revamp an existing garden. Over three days, you’ll gain the practical skills and confidence needed to design your own garden.
Course Structure:
· Day 1 – Introduction, Site Evaluation & Layout Planning: Inspirational introduction from Annie with a group discussion to explore your garden and goals. Learn how to conduct a site survey and analysis, develop a design brief, and create a functional layout plan for effective garden organisation.
· Day 2 – Garden Design Studio: Put theory into practice with a full day of guided garden design work in the studio.
· Day 3 – Planting Design: Discover the principles of planting design and how to research the right plants and plot your own planting plan.
Teaching Approach: The course includes illustrated lectures and practical demos.
Outcome: By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of the garden design process and a plan ready for your own project to progress further.
A further, detailed planting design workshop is a perfect accompaniment to this course. This planting design workshop is run over 2 days in March.
Course materials and requirements
Each student must bring a SCALED TOPOGRAPHIC SURVEY DRAWING of their garden space to work from. The more detailed and accurate the survey the better, as this will ensure you have an accurate plan.
Please bring – a notebook/sketchbook, pens, mechanical pencil, coloured pencils, a scale ruler, a set square, circle guide and eraser.
Some photos of your garden – print these in black and white at A4 size for best results.
There will be some items including notebooks available to buy from the shop.

- Essential materials to bring Notebook, Layout pad, Sketching Pencils, Self-propelling pencil, Eraser, Set Square, Scale ruler, Masking tape/scotch tape, Circle guide, Camera, Scissors, Fine liner – eg Staedtler thickness 0.05 – 0.3 – 0.5 – 0.1 (all are good), Tracing paper – pad or roll is more economical, Sketch book – several sizes is good, Colouring pencils, French Curves, Compass
