Making and Decorating Spontaneous and Dynamic Slipware
4-Day Intensive Workshop with Dylan Bowen

This four-day hands-on course offers an opportunity to explore new approaches to making and decorating slipware with an emphasis on freedom, spontaneity, and process.

Dylan will share his unique making and decorating techniques—both on and off the wheel—introducing methods of cutting, slicing, and carving clay, as well as constructing and assembling forms through wheel-throwing and hand-building. Participants will experiment with slip decoration through pouring, trailing, and brushing, applying each technique as needed to bring energy and immediacy into their work.

Rooted in both traditional slipware practices and the broader ceramic world, these simple yet versatile techniques will serve as a foundation for developing confidence in working directly and responsively with clay. The focus will be on cultivating skills that allow you to work in the moment, embracing action and spontaneity, and following the creative possibilities suggested by the material itself.

Rather than pursuing polished perfection, the workshop encourages curiosity, play, and discovery—helping you build practical making processes that will enrich your ongoing studio practice.
