Maiolica or Tin- glaze painting is a low fired technique dating back to the 9th century Middle East traveling to Europe it reached its peak in the Italian Renaissance. Using various colouring oxides and now coloured stains to create highly coloured graphic imagery often describing visual narratives using brush painting, patterns and typography. Maiolica offers the modern artist a wealth of potential to develop and create their own unique stories in the long history of ceramics.

Gail Anderson
Gail Anderson creates both functional and whimsical ceramics. Her painterly approach to surface decoration is a modern take on the tradition of Maiolica, a technique with is roots in Middle East and Europe.

Your Course
We will take you on a brief journey through the history of Maiolica and how current artists are using it to create different narratives in their work. We will cover some initial brush techniques and ways to use your mark making to create your designs. There will be flat test tiles to practice and develop your skills and colour palettes. The workshop will conclude with participants creating their own painted designs on to raw glazed cup or bowl.
