Since Leaving Camberwell College of Art in 1998 Justine has been primarily working with handbuilt porcelain. Her work addresses the boundaries between function and decoration. Form is paramount; function is a driving motivation, but it is the aesthetics of a piece that are key to her making.

Your Course

Justine Allison 2 day weekend masterclass.

This course will concentrate on techniques for creating thin porcelain slabs and joining them to form vessels.

Justine will demonstrate her methods and a variety of techniques that students can use to achieve diverse results. Students will learn how to add pattern and texture to their creations, and Justine will explain the use of underglazes and simple clear glazing that she uses in her own work. There will be no specific kiln firing during the workshop however she will talk about her firing process. Students will create vessels from their own templates which will be discussed within the workshop, design processes. The students will finish the workshop with a greater understanding of hand building with porcelain and will have pieces ready for firing at bisque. Students will be able to discuss their work throughout the course and will receive plenty of individual attention and support throughout.

Day 1:

Justine will talk about her work and introduction, show samples of finished work.

• Porcelain explanation

• Demo: Justine will demonstrate making a vessel showing her techniques for rolling out and building.

• How to prepare porcelain for slab building.

• How to roll clay to achieve thin slabs ready for building.

• We will start with a simple cylinder form to gauge hand building levels and to get a feel for the material.

Day 2

• Demo: Building with slabs, four sided vessel.

• Continuing from the first day with slab rolling and how this moves on to making vessel.

• Pattern making on our slabs, creating a sheet that can be cut and made into vessels.

• Demo: Decorating techniques on a bisque fired piece, I will bring with me some ready to be tested on.

• Demo: Finishing clay surface

• Students will finish off pieces and also continue making with clay.

Spaces are limited to ensure personalised instruction.
