Sam Boughton is a British Contemporary Landscape painter that lives in Devon, UK. She works primarily in inks and pastel to create semi-abstract landscapes paintings inspired by her travels around the British Isles. Regularly traveling to North West Scotland, Cornwall and North Wales her semi-abstract collections are sensory responses to each of these stunning landscapes.

Your Course

Join Sam on this 4 day immersive landscape workshop where she will introduce you to a fresh and inspiring way to interpret the landscape around us. With demos and clear instructions, you will discover a range of techniques that you can apply to your landscape art to bring movement and energy.

DAY 1:Using black ink we will explore tone, mark making and composition. This will begin to open your eyes to new ways to express the landscape.

DAY 2:Next we will use coloured acrylic ink to describes and capture the colours in the landscape. You will use water sprays, rollers and other tools to make effects.

DAY 3:Next we will incorporate pastels and thicker paints to bring interest and texture.this can be in or out of a sketchbook.

 

DAY 4: Finally we will take everything we know and create a series of mini abstract landscapes from our initial studies

  • Essential materials to bring

    Roll of Masking tape

    Plastic tubs to put inks and water Minimum size jam jar, bring 8 minimum! Plastic yogurt pots / take away tubs / old Tupperware will be good.

    Brushes, big and small. Lost of styles, natural bristles preferred. Can be old decorators brushes from the garage, or watercolour brushes. Any foam rollers or scrapers you might have. Interesting mark making tools.

    A sketch book for drawing in. Can be any size and any watercolour sketchbook you have or one that takes ink ok

    Scissors
    Old rags, tissues, kitchen roll. Anything to soak up water and ink

    Water bottle with lid to take outside and use on location
    Pencils for drawing. Any 4B and softer, so 6B 7B 8B if you have and sharpener

    Sam will bring inks. But if you have any inks at home bring them. I recommend cadmium yellow, a blue and a magenta. Also a burnt Siena and black.

    Sam will also bring Soft pastels. But if you have any soft pastels at home, and other drawing materials like

    Inktense / Artgraf then please bring.

    Appropriate clothing, check weather before workshop / hat or sun glasses

    Bag to take sketchbook and drawing materials

    Something to sit on if you need to. Like a fold out stool if you usually take out something like that. Or a foam mat. Or plastic bag.
