Your Course

Susan has developed a unique way of decorating using coloured porcelain.

In this course, students will explore colour, pattern and imagery using various techniques of staining and layering slips and porcelains. The decoration will be integral. We will create a ceramic collage by layering laminated sheets of coloured clays, inlaid with hand-cut patterns, to generate a form of Nerikomi. The technique involves rubbing through areas of the layers to reveal hidden layers before rolling and stretching the decorated sheets to form simple shapes with moulds and tubes. Making outlines around the inlays, controlling distortion, producing halftone effects, detailing, and emphasising the decorative edge strata will be covered.

After the bisque firing, sanding the work underwater will create a soft, matt, vitrified surface, without glaze. The final firing will be 1280 degrees.

There will be plenty of demonstrations, and students will develop their design and technical skills and have ample opportunity to experiment.

Spaces are limited to ensure personalised instruction.
