Judy McKenzie
Drawing inspiration from Japanese Nerikomi traditions as well as textiles, architecture, and natural pattern formations, Judy creates carefully constructed porcelain surfaces in which pattern is embedded within the clay body itself rather than applied as decoration. Through processes of layering, slicing, compressing, and rebuilding coloured porcelain, she produces vessels and sculptural forms with richly detailed surfaces and subtle tonal variation.
Alongside her studio practice, Judy is an experienced educator who has taught widely through workshops and specialist ceramic courses, including at West Dean College. Her teaching focuses on material understanding, technical precision, and encouraging students to develop confidence through experimentation and process-led making.
Judy’s work reflects a balance between control and spontaneity, where carefully planned pattern systems interact with the movement and behaviour of porcelain during making. Her ceramics are recognised for their refined craftsmanship, sensitivity to colour, and contemporary interpretation of traditional Nerikomi techniques.
Her award winning work was selected from her degree show to be exhibited within the Royal College of Art Graduation Show in Hangzhou, China and she exhibits her work in galleries world wide.
