Your Course
Atmospheric landscapes using oils and cold wax
During this three-day workshop, you’ll explore the expressive possibilities of oils and cold wax, creating atmospheric landscapes with luminous colour, layered texture, and a strong sense of depth and movement.
Through demonstrations and practical exercises, you’ll learn Paula’s intuitive approach to building landscapes and dramatic skies using transparent colour, layering, and a range of tools including brushes, palette knives, and squeegees. As the paintings evolve, you’ll strengthen composition, refine colour harmony, and develop greater confidence in your own creative decisions.
During the workshop you’ll learn how to:
- Build depth and movement through layering, texture, and reduction techniques.
- Create balance and atmosphere by carving back into the surface and introducing quiet spaces.
- Use colour to evoke mood, changing light, and a sense of place.
- Incorporate marble dust, pigments, and other materials to create richly textured surfaces.
- Use a variety of tools to create expressive marks and subtle transitions.
Cold wax offers a more instinctive, exploratory way of painting. Through layering, scraping, and the interplay of transparent and opaque colour, you’ll discover how to create paintings with depth, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. The medium also opens up exciting possibilities for incorporating mixed materials, manipulating the paint surface, and moving towards a more expressive, abstract interpretation of the landscape.
By understanding not only the techniques but the thinking behind them, you’ll leave with greater confidence, a broader creative toolkit, and fresh inspiration for developing your own visual language.

Fan brush Synthetic fan brush such as Daler Rowney System 3 acrylic brush: Fan 6 or equivalent x 1
Range of brushes Bring your favourites, large and small
Arches Huile paper 56 x 76 cm sheets x 2 sheets
Masking tape Artist’s masking tape x 1 roll
Cold wax Gamblin cold wax medium: 473 ml
Oil paints 40 or 60 ml tubes – artist quality such as Gamblin, Michael Harding or equivalent: · Titanium white · Cerulean blue · Ultramarine blue · Crimson Alizarin · Cadmium red · Cadmium yellow deep or Indian yellow · Lemon yellow · Plus bring your favourites with you as well
Apron Or an old shirt / t-shirt to protect your clothes
Nitrile gloves To protect your hands. Approx 2-3 pairs per day
Gamsol Odourless solvent 500 ml bottle – if you are unable to get hold of Gamsol please ensure you bring odourless solvent only.
Newsprint 64 x 45 cm or larger – approx. 5 sheets
Charcoal and / or soft pastels / oil bars / oil sticks Don’t buy anything in specifically for this, just bring a few that you already have
Mark making tools BBQ sticks, forks etc – bring your favourites that you like working with
